Turkmen Minority in Iran
The 22th November 2004 at the Swedish Parliament, a symposium was held concerning the national minorities in Iran. At the symposium people from all around the world was gathered. They represented different organisation whose members came from all around Europe and USA.
Here is a part of the speech held by the representative for the Organisation for the Turkmen peoples national rights.

Ladies and Gentleman , Countrymen and guests!

From the Turkmen people I give you my warm greetings. It is a great delight to see you all hear today where we discuss about Iran’s future for encouragement of democracy and federalism.
It is a great step that this symposium has been possible to carry out. I want to convey my gratitude to those who have spent time and enabled this symposium, among those the Swedish Parliament, Bahram Atabeyli , Göran Lindblad , Dr Manaf  and other hardworking friends.
I am representing the Organisation for the Turkmen people national rights.
We the Turkmen are a people of 3 Million, living in the North of Iran called TurkmenSahra. Our faith is the Sunni branch of Islam, and we speak Turkmen as our mother tongue.

As you already have heard several times during this symposium, Iran is a multi-ethnic state- a state with several nationalities. Since ancient times the Azerbaijanis, Kurds, Turkmen’s, Baloch’s, Arabs, and Lors have been living peacefully together side by side. These people have their own language, their own lifestyle and traditions.
The current regime in Iran and their forerunners have always ignored the facts that there are different nationalities in Iran.  The official language of Iran is Persian and the official religion is Shia written in the § 12 of the Iranian constitution.
Considering the fact that, the majority of Iran’s population is discriminated by law. This is maybe the main reason for all bloody conflicts.

The Islamic government uses the Islamic law “Sharia” and the Shia branch of Islam as an instrument to control and rule after their own fancy (will). This have led to the point where the Turkmen people have been deprived from their basic human rights not only basis of political rights but also all rights connected to fundamental human rights such as to write and read in your mother tongue. Since the last struggle, during the revolution and the aftermath, were the Turkmen’s fought in the Gonbad war for a federal and justice –system in Iran the Turkmen people have been suppressed both systematically and economically by the government.

Despite that the region has the best agriculture opportunities in Iran to grow cotton and other crops there haven’t been even a single investment. Therefore the workers are still using old-traditional methods to harvest their cultivation.
This economical suppression has led to the half of the agriculture industries have been forced to close , ( whipped out) and a great unemployment and poverty as a result.

Not enough with that, the Turkmen’s is forced (subdued) to live under heavily surveillance both military and by police forces. This surveillance comes with the assimilations program whose only purpose was in the past regime and is in the current regime to totally exterminate, eliminate the Turkmen people from their language, their lifestyle, their traditions and identity. This brutal assimilations program isn’t only restricted to the Turkmen’s but also to the other nationalities, as the Kurd’s, Azerbaijanis, Arabs, Baloch’s and Lors. We are considered by the regime as second or third citizens after the Persian’s.

This systematically and economically oppression is displayed by different methods. One of these methods is where people are receiving jobs by the government not because of their experience or competence but by the fact that there are Persians. Other measures taken by the government to assimilate the Turkmen’s is to build 200 new villages in Turkmen Sahra,( the region of the Turkmen’s.) The villages are been built in the heart of the region to outnumber the majority of Turkmen’s and to the border of Turkmenistan, who’s purpose is to totally prevent any contact at all between the Turkmen’s in Iran and Turkmenistan.

This assimilation in our region is put to practise by settlement of thousands of families from other region. These families are granted free land, territory free house and a job by the government. Considering that the given land, territory isn’t owned by government but is by forced deprived from the common Turkmen people.
The assimilation program that the Turkmen’s is exposed to is unacceptable and must be strongly condemned.

We from the Organisation for the Turkmen peoples National rights want to put an end to the suppression that we and our fellow countrymen are exposed to  and  together create an  free, democratically, and federal Iran.
